Developing a Spiritual Core
Our Bible study program consists of three separate prongs:
- A Discipleship Study - that's held every Tuesday evening at one of the discipleship houses. At present, it's being held at the discipleship house located at 4210 54th Street in Sacramento. The time is 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. The focus is specifically discipleship - what it is and what it entails - with an emphasis on the habits and attitudes that enable believers to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit. The course is one full year in length. It's taught by Douglas Shearer and his wife Sita. Doug is Senior Pastor Emeritus of New Hope Christian Fellowship. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of California and was the senior pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship for 28 years. He has authored several books (Calvin on the Ropes has just been published) and “brings to the table” teaching and counseling skills acquired and honed over many years. His manuals on marriage counseling and interpersonal conflict have been widely used in the Sacramento area. The class is free of charge. "Drop-ins" and visitors are always welcome. Go to the "Homework Page" to check out what we've been studying and discussing.
- The New Hope School of Ministry - that meets every Thursday evening. It's a fully developed Bible School Program designed to ground the enrollees in the Word of God - to acquaint them with the fundamental truths of the Christian Faith and to teach them the skills necessary to accurately read and interpret the Bible. It also is one full year in length. The classes are held at 4210 54 Street from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The program is overseen by Pastor Jerry Helmen. Pastor Helmen, ThM, founded the New Hope School of Ministry in December, 2006. He has over 30 years experience as a pastor and Christian leader in both Church and community settings. Jerry graduated from the USAF Academy in 1972 with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and flew as a B-52 Radar Navigator for 8 years. He earned his Masters degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1985. Those completing the full program will be awarded a diploma from the New Hope School of Ministry. The cost of the class is $105.00/month; however, full and partial scholarships are available for those needing financial assistance. The classes can also be audited free of charge or for a very nominal fee; however, no credits will be assigned and no diploma will be awarded. All the disciples are expected to enroll in the New Hope School of Ministry. "Drop-ins" and visitors are always welcome; however, continued attendance needs to be OKed by Pastor Jerry Helmen.
- New Hope Christian Fellowship - The Discipleship Project is not a stand-alone program. It's closely linked to New Hope Christian Fellowship, a church that has been on-going since 1982 - with property and facilities located at 6240 Verner Ave., Sacramento, CA - near the intersection of Interstate 80 and Greenback Lane. Its teaching ministries, classes, service and fellowship groups all help to enhance the effectiveness of the Discipleship Project.
